Pressestimmen
Saying that Jerry Ziesmer probably has delivered the greatest assistant director book ever written doesn't do it justice...this book relates that biz and its lore with color, intimacy, candor and horse sense...--Directors Guild Of America Magazine...one of the best books of the lot... Suffice it to say that Ziesmer's treatment of Apocalypse Now alone is worth the price of the volume. In addition, his discussion of other films that he worked on, including John Huston's Annie, is equally frank, incisive, and entertaining. Ready when You Are is a well-deserved toast to the unsung heroes of moviemaking -- the assistant directors.--Literature/ Film Quarterly...the book is at once so personal and so professional that you'll find yourself longing to have "been here when" and worked with Jerry either at DGA or on pictures or both. This is, quite simply, not only the best book ever written about what we so often bandy about as the "craft" of the Assistant Director, it is one of the best books I've read in a long time, period.--The Call SheetIf you ever wondered who has the best behind-the-scenes anecdotes in Hollywood, then Ziesmer wins hands down. His book contains some astonishing tales, ranging from life-affirming friendships made under the most trying of circumstances through to the most indulgent star behaviour imaginable. Put it all together and you have an instant five-star classic.--Film Review...Jerry Ziesmer, who has been a top AD in Hollywood for 30 years, has a real gift for writing that shines through in his recollections from the front lines of movie production. Ziesmer's war stories about filmmaking are hilarious, heartbreaking and hair-raising all at once, as he recounts his experiences...--American Cinematographer
Synopsis
Now available in paperback! No movie has ever been made, or made well, without the character who toils just outside the spotlight. He arranged for the spotlight, hired the spotlight operator, and even made sure that it was trained correctly on the stars. At the end of the day, there would be no blinking movie screens, no blinking Oscar winners, no finished films, good or bad, without the Assistant Director. Jerry Ziesmer was an assistant director for over thirty years, working on countless films before his retirement in the middle-nineties. He has worked with some of Hollywood's biggest directors, and its biggest stars. In this memoir, he recounts his time in Hollywood including his work on the sets of Apocalypse Now, Close Encounters, and Jerry Maguire. Written with the craft and humor that made Jerry Ziesmer one of the most sought-after assistant directors in Hollywood, this book will be a treasure for students and fans of twentieth-century Hollywood. Cloth edition previously published in 2000.

This book is what every filmstudent just begs to read. An insightful first hand description of the personalities, the feuds, the friendships, the human factor and the machinery of Hollywood filmmaking. You are provided with an unusually entertaining and informative look into the film business. Jerry Ziesmer's book is "two thumbs up". The warmth and humility of his tone and the opportunity to hear about icons like Spielberg, Coppola or Pollack and their individual working methods is just invaluable. The point of view of the 1st assistent director brings you closest to the decision making and psychological processes on the sets of world class directors. I can only recommend this book to anybody who is interessted in film.
I'm the author of "Ready When You Are, Mr. Coppola, Mr. Spielberg, Mr. Crowe" and I appreciate Amazon.com giving me this opportunity to comment on my book. The book deals with my journey as a filmmaker from "Apocalypse Now" with Francis Coppola and Marlon Brando, to "Close Encounters" and "1941" with Steven Spielberg and Francois Truffaut, and finally to "Jerry Maguire" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe--who wrote the introduction for my book. The book shares my thirty years of making motion pictures with some of the finest film artists of our time: Sydney Pollack creating "The Way We Were" with Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford; Francis Coppola directing Marlon Brando on "Apocalypse Now", and Bryan DePalma dealing with Al Pacino in "Scarface". The book is written to share my life and experiences in film with you in hopes that it will add to your enjoyment of film and an understanding of those who choose to spend their lifes as filmmakers. Thank you. Jerry Ziesmer
I appreciate Amazon.com giving me the opportunity to comment on my book "Ready When You Are, Mr. Coppola, Mr. Spielberg, Mr. Crowe". The book contains my journey as a filmmaker, husband, and father from "Apocalypse Now" with Francis Coppola and Marlon Brando to "Close Encounters" with Steven Spielberg and Francois Truffaut and finally to "Jerry Maguire" with Tom Cruise and Cameron Crowe who wrote the introduction to my book. I stood beside them as their assistant director in both the sun and the rain. It's a journey working with the best cinematic artists of our age in some of the greatest motion picture achievements of our times...and then standing at a new grave in a small cemetery in West Los Angeles near the crypts of Marilyn Monroe and Helen Hayes and asking: "Would I do it all again?"My family and I hope you enjoy the book and come to a greater appreciation of the art of cinema and of those who spend their life's journey putting light and shadows upon the movie screens. Thank you.
Disclaimer--I know Jerry from working with him on the Director's Guild Council, and I have utmost respect for him as a professional filmmaker. But I never knew his talents extended to such cogent, fun-to-read, full-of-insight writing until reading this wonderful book. It combines the best of both worlds--the "inside baseball" stuff that pro's with years of experience will still find new and fresh and helpful to their work AND the "Hollywood" anecdotage that any fan of great movies and moviemakers will read with a chuckle and a tear and a lot of smiles. If you really want to go "Behind the scenes"--save the trip to Universal's tour and get this book instead. You'll learn a lot, and have a great, great time!
Because of the hefty price, I gave much thought before buying this kindle book .. and I'm not (too) disappointed. But this book IS unusual because of its relatively high price. So since I already paid for it, I feel like I owe other interested readers a good enough review to decide if they want to own it right now, too. if you are asking yourself if this book is worth buying? The short answer is: probably not. While it is a first-class account about the making of one of the last epic films, has a lot of interesting and very personal accounts and details of the film's production, and has a lot of material from a viewpoint you won't find anywhere else - there is nothing about this book to justify paying almost $50 for. Should you buy this book, yes, just not at its current price! At 400 pages, the material is lengthy enough (a frequent complaint I have with really good books is when they end too quickly and leave me wanting more). Also the material is interesting enough (but not what I'd call "gripping" exactly) to read to the end. But there are no stunning revelations here, no startling reveals or any dirt about any of the big name stars/directors/producers here (in fact I think Ziesmer goes out of his way to be TOO nice a guy! At some points you'd almost appreciate a little thrown mud, even if it were delivered via the backhanded complement method) but there is none of this. So I found the parts of the book about "Apocalypse worthwhile to read, specifically:Ziesmer describes what was supposed to be a 6-week shoot turning into a production spanning literally years, the difficulties of filming in the jungles of the Phillipines, the P.B.R. boats used in the movie that turned out to be worn out junk and had to be coaxed to finish a scene by spiking the diesel with jet fuel (and ultimately had to be replaced with newer boats purchased from Thailand; exactly how and from whom, or for how much, is unfortunately not detailed), the destruction to the sets wrought by Hurricane Ruby, but that actually turned into a God-send of sorts (the production insurance covered "acts of God" so it paid for the reconstruction of the sets, which actually saved the production from financial disaster) and many other details of this nature that I find so fascinating (and are the reason I wanted this book in the first place). So yes, get this book if you are interested in the subject... But the decision whether to pay $50, or to just wait for a price drop in a couple of years is the question. In the meantime, the "Apocalypse now" book is a good alternative and a lot cheaper.
This book is amazing. I felt I was with Mr. Ziesmer throughout the highlights of his career, seeing everything with his eyes, and learning much about filmmaking and the people that crafted cinema history. As a film-loving Filipino, Mr. Ziesmer's in-depth account of the creation of Apocalypse Now in the Philippines had a special resonance. If you're reading this, Mr. Jerry Ziesmer, sir, from the bottom of my heart, THANK YOU. Thank you for writing this book. You revived my dream of making movies.
Interesting read. The section on Apocalypse Now was the most interesting for me. I wish the author spoke about how the films were received a little more. He just writes about his own experience and then moves on to another movie. He never reveals anything really juicy along the lines of Easy, Riders and Raging Bulls like Peter Biskind.
Love the book. I can't put it down.
Since I am acquainted with Jerry I loved his stories even more. They really brought to life stories he has told me.
